What is the Magnificat?

The Magnificat is a hymn of praise that was recited or sung by the Blessed Mother at the time of her visit to her cousin Elizabeth, shortly after the Annunciation. Picture yourself in the courtyard of Elizabeth's house... you can be a fly on the wall... Elizabeth cries out to Mary "How is it that the mother of my Lord should come to me?" And Mary replies singing God's praises:

"My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in God my Savior
for He has looked with favor on His lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed.
The Almighty has done great things for me and holy is His name.
He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation.
He has shown the strength of His arm, He has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled hte hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of Israel His servant for he has remembered his promise of mercy,
the promise He made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever."
Luke1:46-56
Thus, the feast of the Visitation, is an important feast to Magnificat Chapters all over the world.

But what is the Magnificat Organization all about?

Magnificat is a private association of the faithful within the Catholic Church under the jurisdiction of the local ordinary. Magnificat began October 7, 1981, the feast of the Holy Rosary, at the encouragement of Archbishop Phillip M. Hannan and Auxiliary Bishop Stanley J. Ott of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, Louisiana. Magnificat was born out of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and has been nurtured by it.

The purpose of Magnificat is to be a means through which Catholic women who have been awakened to the Holy Spirit operating in their lives can share with others the Good News of Salvation and thus in this way impart the Holy Spirit, one to another. It is a woman to woman ministry that seeks to encourage Catholic women to open more and more to the Holy Spirit through a deeper commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord and to impart the Holy Spirit one to another by their love, service and sharing of the Good News of salvation.

Magnificat provides opportunities and encouragement for women which will foster a lively faith in God and His action in our lives, a love for Mary and the Church as well as a desire to grow in holiness.
